Audrey & Alex’s Ann Arbor Engagement Session at the University of Michigan Law Quad & Nichols Arboretum

Ann Arbor is full of beautiful locations for engagement photos, but the combination of the University of Michigan Law Quadrangle and Nichols Arboretum offers both historic buildings and beauty in nature. For Audrey & Alex’s engagement session, we started at the historic stone Law Quad before heading into the Arb’s spring blooms.

Why the UMich Law Quad Is Perfect for Classic Ann Arbor Engagement Photos

The University of Michigan Law Quadrangle is one of Ann Arbor’s most iconic photo spots. Its Gothic architecture, carved stone archways, and quiet courtyards make every image feel polished and timeless.

Couples love the Law Quad for:

  • Architectural, European-inspired backdrops
  • Soft, glowy light filtered through tall stone buildings
  • Symmetrical archways perfect for portraits
  • A clean, elegant setting year-round

We wandered through the courtyard, stopping at the arches and the graduate library to capture those timeless, editorial-style shots the Law Quad is known for.

Nichols Arboretum

After finishing at the Law Quad, we headed to Nichols Arboretum, one of Ann Arbor’s most scenic outdoor spaces. The Arb’s winding trails, tall grasses, and river views create a peaceful, natural contrast to the formal architecture of campus.

At Nichols Arboretum, we explored:

  • Trails with spring blooms
  • Tree-lined paths
  • Shaded forest areas
  • The peony garden

The Arb is especially beautiful in spring and summer when everything is green and glowing, but it also shines during fall with rich color and texture. The shift from the architectural lines of the Law Quad to the soft, natural tones of the Arb gave Audrey & Alex a perfectly balanced engagement gallery.

Highlights From This Ann Arbor Engagement Session

Some of my favorite moments from the session:

  • A quiet moment under the Law Quad’s main archway
  • Golden light drifting across the Arb’s peony garden

Architecture and nature in one session created an incredibly dynamic set of images that feels uniquely “Ann Arbor.”

Tips for Planning Engagement Photos at the Law Quad & Nichols Arboretum

Thinking about choosing these locations for your own session? Here are a few helpful tips:

  • Schedule strategically: Aim for golden hour at Nichols Arboretum and earlier light at the Law Quad for softer shadows.
  • Avoid student crowds: Sundays or dates when UMich students are on break are ideal for the Law Quad.
  • Wear versatile outfits: Neutral tones and classic pieces look amazing in both architectural and natural settings.
  • Prepare for walking: The Arb has trails and hills. Comfortable shoes between shots help!
  • Bring a second outfit: Many couples choose something polished for the Law Quad and something more relaxed for the Arb.

Why Ann Arbor Is Perfect for Engagement Photos

Ann Arbor offers the best of both worlds: historic campus architecture & lush natural spaces. Whether you’re alumni, locals, or simply love the charm of this city, the Law Quad + Nichols Arboretum combination creates a meaningful, elevated engagement session.
